About LOMCB

History

The Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band (LOMCB) was formed in the fall of 1999 as part of the Millennium celebration sponsored by the City of Lake Oswego.  The charge for the band was to perform one of a series of concerts and activities that would lead the Lake Oswego community toward a grand community celebration of the coming of the new millennium.  Dale Cleland, a long-time Lake Oswego resident and former Lake Oswego Schools Director of Music, was appointed as director of the new organization.  A call for musicians went out and rehearsals started soon thereafter for the 55 member concert band.

Our band had a highly successful concert in November, 1999, and since the musicians and their director were having so much fun, it was decided to continue the band's rehearsal and performance schedule.  We played a well received concert at Marylhurst University in early April, 2000, and performed again before a large and enthusiastic crowd in the newly dedicated Millennium Park Plaza in downtown Lake Oswego in June, 2000.

Since that time the band has grown to a full instrumentation concert band of 72 musicians. We perform three formal concerts at Lakeridge High School each season, before a highly responsive and loyal audience of between 450 and 600 people.  The band usually participates in the Statewide Adult Band Festival and has been presenting Fourth of July concerts at Millennium Park in downtown Lake Oswego and in the community of Laurel.  A smaller group of band members also plays for the Annual Christmas tree Lighting in Millennium Park each year.

In addition to the concert band, two smaller ensembles, a clarinet quartet (The Millennium Clarinets) and a brass quintet (The Millennium Brass), have been active for several years and have performed regularly throughout the Portland metro area. The Millennium woodwind Quintet has also started to accept performances and will be performing for vaious events in the area.  These highly accomplished ensembles are available to perform at concerts, private parties, receptions, receptions, weddings and many other venues.

During the 2007-2008 season, LOMCB will rehearse each Sunday evening in the band room at Lakeridge High School and will continue to present high quality musical performances for the citizens of Lake Oswego and the surrounding area.

Director's Bio

Dale Cleland has been involved in the musical life of Lake Oswego since 1966 when he was hired to be the Band Director at Lake Oswego High School.  Since that time he also held positions of Band Director at Lakeridge High School, Coordinator of Music, Director of Music and Athletics, and Director of Programs and Services at the District level.  When he retired in 1992, he was Assistant Principal at Lakeridge High School.

Prior to his move to Lake Oswego, Mr. Cleland was Band Director at Cascade High School in Everett, Washington.  His formal education was attained at the University of Iowa, where he earned the Bachelor of Music and the Master of Arts degrees.  While at the University of Iowa, Mr. Cleland studied privately for five years with one of the world's finest clarinet teachers, Himie Voxman.  Since that time, Mr. Cleland has taught privately and performed on clarinet and saxophone in many dance and concert bands.  He currently plays clarinet in the Oregon Symphonic Band and the Millennium Clarinets..

Membership

Members of LOMCB come from several communities and while many live in the Lake Oswego area or have ties to Lake Oswego as former students, that relationship is not a requirement.  Our members are physicians, teachers, housewives, computer technologists, train engineers, scientists, engineers, retirees and on and on.  The only requirements are that they have a love of music, play their instruments at an acceptable level and are willing to share their musical skills with others by attending rehearsals regularly and performing in our concerts.  Our rehearsals are designed to be fun and enjoyable, and at the same time musically and technically demanding.  Since it is necessary that a proper balance between instruments is maintained, prospective members should contact the Musical Director at (503) 603-0511.  Also, for additional information see Member Info.
